The Challenges

Now we are into Week 7 of our BYOD journey we have ironed out many teething issues and have learnt a lot from each other along the way (I'm arguing who has learnt the most, me or the kids).  However as usual with most technologies interacting with each other there are a few challenging issues we are yet to overcome - currently looking for assistance/advice so feel free to lend a voice.

  • Google Drive App VS Drive via Google Chrome
    • Drive App supports easy editing, easy sharing, easy viewing etc
    • Drive App does not support text to speak (built in iPad function) or spell check
    • Drive via Chrome supports text to speak & spell check
    • Drive via Chrome is a bit trickier to share and edit docs especially when collaborating live.
  • Blogger App and via Browser
    • App doesn't allow for easy addition and resizing of images. (Must change default size in settings)
    • Browser often freezes when commenting (keyboard freezes) &  deletes comment drafts.
  • iPad and Ultranet
    • There seems to be a few issues with editing content using the iPad.  This should be solved shortly thou as we had no problem doing the same last year using school iPads.
  • Sharing content (teacher-students & student-student)
    • Ultranet has been great for teacher uploading and student downloading.
    • Hapara dashboard is a godsend for keeping track or students google docs.  Some choose to write in their books this week - I forgot how time consuming marking these is!
    • How to share photos, videos, projects etc
      • Emailing can get overwhelming to manage.
      • Yes we could upload to drive - but are they still editable then? & are all file formats compatible?
      • Thinking a class dropbox account might be the go here. That way we can retrieve when required etc.  Any thoughts on this?
      • Anyone used Showbie App?  Looks like this could work also and allows for ongoing commenting (text and sound) to be linked to each file.  Appears to be only between teacher and student however.
Off to do some more goggling !   "Google three before me" - Thanks Kate @ Bamford for my new favourite saying.

  1. Love your 'Google three before me'!

We have found when loading images to the blog it's easier to edit on the chromebooks afterwards to resize the images. It's a pain so would love to find a solution.

What problems are you having when trying to share and edit docs in chrome?

    1. Yes we have done some resizing via PC afterwards, keen to find away on the iPads thou. Maybe its just setting the default size smaller and dealing with it,

More thinking about sharing videos or ongoing projects created on specific apps. At the moment completed published work (we use google docs for drafting and then a publishing app like pages, keynote etc for presentation) is emailed to me but it is easy to loose track of things and loose other emails in amongst the kaos. They could upload these to drive (i think?) but not sure if this is the best method....i need to do some more exploring re this to see if drop box would be similar for any completed work. More as a pick up/drop off point. Are you using drive for everything?

  2. Hi
We are embarking on the beginning of our BYOD journey. I find resizing images and other limitations on the ipad too, however after listening to Mark Osbourne from CORE students may need to learn which device is best for the task at hand - I guess like us, we use a smart phone for quick shots but a point and shoot camera for more complex shots.

Would icloud work instead of dropbox great for sending large video files or a batch of photos.

Google docs is great and unfortunate Apple haven't cracked this app yet, however I have recently found google docs app allows editing YAY!

I to love your google saying : )

  3. Hi LC 10 @ West Melton
Thanks for your feedback. Yes i really believe in the "right tool for the task". I have also learnt a lot from listening to Mark Osbourne on several occasions. We are looking into expanding the variety of devices for future BYOD programmes but this year we have just worked with iPads. This has been great to see their capabilities and limitations, i still believe the capabilities outweigh the limitations and hopefully this will only become stronger as google learns more about how it needs to work in with apple. I son't think icloud will work as each child has their own separate itunes account. We have been using google drive to share photos which is working well but will look further into this over the holidays i think. Yes he app allowing editing is great, next would be allowing tables to be worked with in the app. All the best for your journey.
